German Chancellor Olaf Scholz announced on Wednesday that his country has not decided to stop supplying weapons to Israel, but will continue to do so, considering at the same time that his government's demand to boycott goods, services and commodities coming from Israel is "disgusting."
This came in statements made by Scholz at an annual press conference in the capital, Berlin, against the backdrop of demands to stop arming Israel, which has been practicing "genocide" against the Palestinians in the Gaza Strip for 10 months.
The German Chancellor said that his government will not support calls to boycott goods, services and commodities coming from Israel, considering such demands "disgusting."
Last May, dozens of human rights and relief associations in Germany called on the government to stop arms exports to Israel and to fulfill its obligations under international law, in light of the war on Gaza. The demand came in an open letter sent by the associations to the German Chancellor and the Ministers of Economy, Defense, Foreign Affairs and Justice.
Germany continues to provide military support to Israel, which has been waging a devastating war on the Gaza Strip for 9 months, killing and wounding more than 129,000 people, and is facing charges of committing genocide before the International Court of Justice.
Germany is Israel's second-largest arms supplier after the United States, and although arms sales have declined slightly, they continue, even as Israel is on international trial for genocide in Gaza.
