Gynecologist Dr. Alina Stepanova points out that pregnancy is not a contraindication to sexual activity, but after childbirth, one should abstain from sex for several weeks.
“Although sexual activity is safe for most pregnant women, there are complications that can pose a risk,” says the doctor. “For example, if a woman is at risk for premature birth, placenta previa, short cervix or premature amniotic fluid leakage, then the doctor will recommend abstaining from sex.”
But according to her, sex should be avoided after giving birth, so that the birth canal, muscles, vaginal tissues and tears that occurred can return to their normal state.
“Postpartum discharge lasts for several weeks, increasing the risk of infection during sexual activity. Breastfeeding can also cause vaginal dryness,” she says.
