Chinese player dies during badminton match

A 17-year-old Chinese player, Zhang Zhijie, fell suddenly during an Asian Championship match in Yogyakarta, Indonesia, on Monday, and was later pronounced dead.

According to the Indonesian Badminton Association, Zhang Zhijie was facing Japan's Kazuma Kawano at the Asian Junior Badminton Championships last Sunday when he staggered and collapsed in the middle of the court.

Social media users circulated a video clip documenting the moment the player suddenly fell to the ground before his death was announced after he was transferred to the hospital.

Badminton officials said medical teams treated Zhang on the field and he was taken by ambulance to a nearby hospital, later being transferred to Sardjito General Hospital. "The results of the victim's examination and treatment at both hospitals showed the same result, that he had a sudden cardiac arrest," Indonesian Badminton Association spokesman Proto Happy told reporters.

The Chinese Badminton Association offered its condolences and support to Zhang's family, describing him as a player who "loved badminton and was an outstanding athlete in the national youth badminton team."
