China and Guinea-Bissau sign new strategic partnership

Chinese President Xi Jinping met on Wednesday with the President of the Republic of Guinea-Bissau, Umaro Sissoco Embalo, who is visiting Beijing.

The two leaders agreed to promote their bilateral relations to the level of a strategic partnership.

They highlighted the importance of the national anthem of Guinea-Bissau, which symbolises the deep friendship between their peoples. In a statement in Portuguese, Umaro Sissoco Embalo, President of the Republic of Guinea-Bissau, said: “ President Xi mentioned our national anthem, which we sing every day. It was written by our founding father and composed by a Chinese friend. This is something we will never forget. China has supported us before and after our country gained independence, and we have always stood in solidarity with China. China has not only helped Guinea-Bissau, it has also supported the entire African continent. ”

At the invitation of Xi Jinping, Umaro Sissoco Embalo is on a state visit to China until July 13.
