Causes of slow metabolism

Russian nutritionist Dr. Alexei Bereznikov revealed the reasons for slowing down the metabolism in adults.

“Weight gain can be due to genetic predisposition. Endocrine diseases also affect weight gain, so a deficiency of phytohormones or a deficiency of thyroid hormone C4 leads to a slowdown in metabolism,” the expert says.

According to him, there are types of obesity that are linked to gender. For example, a man can gain weight due to a lack of sex hormones, because testosterone ensures muscle growth and at the same time is a good stimulator of metabolism and protects against atherosclerosis. As for women, excess estrogen can lead to female-specific obesity. This increase has nothing to do with overeating.

The expert points out that most people gain weight due to an incorrect diet and low physical activity because the metabolism speeds up in people who exercise, and on the contrary, it slows down in people who live a sedentary lifestyle. For example, 3500-3700 calories may be necessary for athletes, while for people who live a sedentary lifestyle or are sedentary, it should not exceed 1700 calories.

The expert recommends that in order to speed up the metabolism, it is necessary to achieve a balance between the amount of calories that a person gets from eating and the amount that he spends, so he should move more and participate actively in housework as much as possible.
