The Bangladesh government has urged the Burmese military council to honor its commitment to repatriate more than a million Rohingya refugees.
According to a statement from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Bangladesh, Myanmar Military Council Foreign Minister U Than Swe and Bangladesh Foreign Minister, who attended the meeting of foreign ministers of the Bay of Bengal Cooperation Organization (BIMSTEC) held in New Delhi, India, met on July 11 and discussed the repatriation of Rohingya refugees.
Military Council Foreign Minister U Than Swe responded positively to the repatriation of Rohingya refugees, according to the statement.
In 2017, the Burmese military's operation to clear Rakhine state caused more than a million Rohingya to flee to Bangladesh, most of whom are sheltering in refugee camps in Coxabazar.
Although the authorities of the two countries are discussing the return of Rohingya refugees who fled in 2017, there are more Rohingya fleeing to Bangladesh due to the recent military conflict in Rakhine State.
Due to the fighting between the Arakan Army (AA) and the Military Council troops, not only Rohingya but also some Military Council troops often flee to Bangladesh.
