A simple test that reveals if the body is dehydrated

Health experts say there is a simple way to detect dehydration using your fingers.

The method involves "skin pinching" with two fingers on the abdomen, the front of the hand, or the skin on the chest below the collarbone for a few seconds, holding the fingers in place while pinching.

After pressing the skin for a few seconds, release it, and if it returns to its normal position immediately, it means that your body is well hydrated. While the opposite indicates dehydration.

In this regard, Dr. Dana Brims, who resides in Los Angeles, explained in a video on "TikTok" that has garnered more than 4.5 million views, that this is called the skin turgor test, which measures the elasticity of the skin.

“When the body is well hydrated, your skin has more elasticity and quickly returns to its original shape after being pinched. On the other hand, dehydration leads to decreased skin elasticity,” she said.

Keeping your skin hydrated helps maintain collagen, the protein that provides structure and strength to skin, muscles, and bones.

However, skin elasticity can decrease with age, no matter how much water you drink.

Other signs of dehydration include: extreme thirst, decreased urination, dark urine, fatigue, dizziness, and confusion.

The Mayo Clinic recommends that men drink 15.5 cups of water a day (3.7 liters) and women drink 11.5 cups (2.7 liters).
