Warnings of a decline in the number of births in Switzerland

The Swiss Federal Statistical Office indicated that the number of births fell to a historic low in Switzerland last year.

A statement issued by the office said: “The number of children per woman in Switzerland reached 1.33 in 2023, which is the lowest historical level. In 2023, 80,000 live births were registered in Switzerland, which is 2.3 thousand, or 2.8%, less than it was in 2023.” 2022.. The statement indicated that in 2023, the number of births in Switzerland decreased by 4.2% for Swiss mothers, and this percentage decreased by 0.8% for mothers who hold foreign nationalities, and with regard to the nationality of children, the office indicated that Switzerland witnessed last year the birth of about 56,100 children carrying Swiss citizenship, while 23,900 children of foreign nationalities were born there.

The office noted that the average age of women at the birth of their first child was 31.2 years in Switzerland in 2022, and reached 31.3 years in 2023.
