United Nations: Sudan’s aid plan needs urgent funding

The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees announced that the international program to assist Sudanese affected by the armed conflict in the country was only 16% funded.

High Commissioner spokesman William Spindler said during a press conference in Geneva on Friday that “Sudan and neighboring countries need urgent funding to save lives,” noting that the situation in Sudan is worsening and residents are “looking for security and protection within the country and neighboring countries such as Chad.” South Sudan, Egypt, Ethiopia and Central Africa.

He pointed out that the international plan to deal with humanitarian issues for the current year, which stipulates the allocation of $2.7 billion to help 14.7 million Sudanese, was funded by only 16%.

He added that $1.4 billion is needed to meet the needs of Sudanese refugees in neighboring countries, as about 2.7 million people in 5 countries are waiting for assistance. So far, the United Nations has received only 5% of this amount.

The spokesman called on donor countries to implement their pledges to allocate funds to assist Sudan immediately.

It is noteworthy that last April, the donor conference in Paris announced donations amounting to more than two billion dollars, but the full amount has not been collected yet.
