The Tunisian News Agency reported that Tunisian President Kais Saied decided today, Friday, to terminate the duties of Minister of Religious Affairs, Ibrahim Chaibi.
The Tunisian presidency said in a brief statement: “The President of the Republic, Kais Saied, decided today, Friday, June 21, 2024, to terminate the duties of Mr. Ibrahim Al-Chaibi, Minister of Religious Affairs.”
This morning, Al-Chaibi told the Tunisian Agency, upon the arrival of the first plane returning pilgrims to Tunis-Carthage Airport, that “the number of Tunisian pilgrims who died in the Holy Sites has risen to 49 male and female pilgrims.”
Al-Shaibi acknowledged the possibility of a negligence in informing the pilgrims, saying: “The negligence may exist, and we will make an evaluation at the ministry level, and whoever neglects will receive his punishment.”
Agence France-Presse reported yesterday that the number of deaths of pilgrims this year exceeded a thousand , while a diplomatic source indicated that most of the victims did not have Hajj permits.
A senior Saudi official defended the Kingdom's management of the Hajj rituals, after various countries announced the death of more than 1,100 people this year, while performing the Hajj pilgrimage in Mecca.
The official told Agence France-Presse in the first official comment on the deaths of pilgrims: “The state did not fall short, but there is a misjudgment on the part of people who did not appreciate the risks that would happen to them.”
Temperatures this week in Saudi Arabia reached 45 degrees Celsius, and in Mecca it recorded 52 degrees .
In the same context, Saudi Prince Abdul Rahman bin Musaed responded to “offensive” video clips of the Kingdom regarding the Hajj season, which were circulated on social media sites .
The Saudi Prince confirmed that many of these videos are fabricated and contain unfounded slander.
