Trump demands release of those accused of attacking the Capitol building

Former US President and Republican candidate for the upcoming elections, Donald Trump, called for the release of those detained during the January 6, 2021 attack on the Congress building.

The former president based his demand during a public rally yesterday, Friday, on the ruling issued by the Supreme Court in favor of a person after he appealed the accusation against him of obstruction of justice, which is the accusation that Trump also faces.

"Release the hostages of January 6th now. They need to be released now for what they've been through... They've been waiting a long time for this decision," Trump said at the rally, to cheers from the crowd.

The court ruled by a majority of 6 to 3 to overturn a lower court decision that allowed the filing of obstruction of official proceedings against the defendant, Joseph Fisher, a former police officer. This charge is related to Congress's certification of President Joe Biden's election victory in 2020, which rioters sought to obstruct.

The Supreme Court recently directed the lower court to reconsider the case, a potential boost for Trump, who faces two counts of obstruction of justice as part of a four-count criminal indictment filed last year by special counsel Jack Smith, in which Trump has pleaded not guilty.

The Supreme Court is expected to rule Monday on Trump’s claim of presidential immunity from prosecution in the election sabotage case brought by special counsel Jack Smith. Monday will be the last day of the court’s current term.
