Tips for those who suffer from sun allergy

Dr. Svetlana Sharshkova, an allergy and immunology specialist, provided some advice for people who suffer from sun allergies.

According to the doctor, sun allergy (photodermatosis) is a skin disease characterized by hypersensitivity of the skin to ultraviolet rays.

The doctor points out that sunlight does not cause allergies, but excessive accumulation of photosensitizers under the skin - substances formed under the influence of the sun, increases the skin's sensitivity to sunlight.

She says: “Symptoms of sun allergy appear within minutes to hours or even days, usually in exposed areas of the skin that have been exposed to sunlight, in the form of redness, swelling, and various types of skin rashes in the form of spots, pimples, bubbles, and peeling. The person feels itching, burning, and discomfort.”

According to her, sun allergy is a temporary phenomenon, but in severe cases, in addition to the symptoms mentioned above, it may cause poor health, headaches, and high body temperature.

She says: “There is no general treatment. So when the first signs appear, a person should take shelter in the shade or stay at home. But when the symptoms are severe, he should take antihistamines and use ointments and creams externally.”

It advises people who suffer from sun sensitivity to reduce their exposure to sunlight at the beginning of the season and then gradually increase it, so that the body gradually gets used to the effect of ultraviolet rays, and this reduces the risk of an allergic reaction. It is also advised not to be exposed to the sun from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., because ultraviolet rays are at their peak.
