Slovak President Peter Pellegrini signed a law on Wednesday limiting the payment of housing compensation to refugees from Ukraine, according to the website of the Slovak presidency.
The Slovak Parliament has previously approved this document, and now compensation for sheltering refugees from Ukraine will be paid within just 120 days of the first asylum being granted in Slovakia, and representatives of vulnerable groups can apply for it without time restrictions.
Last February, the Slovak government reduced the amount of compensation paid by the state to landlords who provide housing for refugees from Ukraine by almost half, and this prompted the refugees to provide basic needs at their own expense.
In early June, the Slovak Cabinet decided to cancel this compensation, and offered to pay housing costs for newly arrived refugees from Ukraine for only 120 days.
According to the document, vulnerable groups of people were excluded, which include people with disabilities, the elderly, and children under the age of five, and housing will be provided for them at state expense without a time limit.
The changes will take effect starting next July.
