The number of pilgrim deaths this year exceeded a thousand, according to an Agence France-Presse tally, while a diplomatic source indicated that most of the victims did not have Hajj permits.

An Arab diplomat told the agency that 58 additional deaths were recorded among Egyptian pilgrims, which brings the number of Egyptians who died this season to at least 658, including 630 who did not hold Hajj permits.

Earlier, Agence France-Presse reported that at least 550 pilgrims died this year due to the hot weather, most of them Egyptians and Jordanians.

This week, temperatures in Saudi Arabia reached 45 degrees Celsius, and 52 degrees in Mecca.
