Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced on Tuesday that the ruling National Democratic Alliance had won the country's general elections for the third time in a row, describing the victory as a "historic achievement."

According to the results reported by local media, the ruling “National Democratic Alliance” advanced by winning 295 seats out of 543 seats in Parliament, compared to 231 for the opposition “Indian National Congress” alliance. Thus, the ruling National Democratic Alliance exceeds the required threshold (272 seats) to form the government.

India witnessed general elections in 7 stages, which lasted 6 weeks, and about 650 million voters out of a billion eligible to vote participated to choose members of Parliament, according to the Indian Election Authority. The Indian elections are large in terms of their size and the logistical difficulties associated with them, as 642 million voters cast their votes in major cities and in remote, sparsely populated areas such as the Himalayas.
