On Monday, the foreign ministers of Jordan, the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Qatar and Egypt held a virtual meeting during which they discussed developments in the mediation efforts undertaken by Cairo, Doha and Washington to reach a deal in Gaza.
The foreign ministers of Jordan, the UAE, and Saudi Arabia affirmed their support for efforts to reach an exchange deal that would lead to a permanent ceasefire, the release of hostages and detainees, and the adequate entry of aid into the Gaza Strip.
The ministers of the five countries also discussed the proposal presented by US President Joe Biden on May 31, 2024.
The foreign ministers of Jordan, the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Qatar and Egypt also stressed the importance of dealing seriously and positively with the US President’s proposal with the aim of agreeing on a deal that guarantees a permanent ceasefire and the adequate delivery of aid to all parts of the Gaza Strip, in a way that ends the suffering of the people of the Strip.
The ministers stressed the need to stop the aggression against Gaza and end the humanitarian catastrophe it is causing, the return of the displaced to their areas, the complete withdrawal of Israeli forces from the Gaza Strip, and the launch of a reconstruction process within the framework of a comprehensive plan to implement the two-state solution in accordance with the relevant Security Council resolutions and with specific timings and binding guarantees.
On the other hand, the ministers stressed that implementing the two-state solution, which embodies an independent, sovereign Palestinian state along the lines of June 4, 1967, with East Jerusalem as its capital, to live in security and peace alongside Israel in accordance with the relevant international legitimacy resolutions, is the way to achieve security and peace for all in the region.
On Friday, May 31, Biden announced that Israel had presented a three-stage proposal that includes a ceasefire in Gaza, the release of detainees, and the reconstruction of the Strip.
When announcing the proposal on Friday, President Joe Biden said it would begin with a six-week phase that would see the withdrawal of Israeli forces from all populated areas in the Gaza Strip and an initial exchange of hostages and prisoners.
Then negotiations will take place between Israel and the Palestinians for a permanent ceasefire, with the truce continuing as long as the talks continue, considering that “the time has come for this war to end.”
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's office said that the war on Gaza will not end until all its goals are achieved.
For its part, Hamas announced in its initial reaction that it “views positively” the proposed three-stage plan .
It is heart-warming.
