Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva assured the G7 countries on Friday that the only way that will make peace in Ukraine possible is an international conference recognized by both Moscow and Kiev.
Reuters quoted da Silva as saying on the sidelines of the G7 summit: “Peace will not be achieved (in Ukraine) except through an international conference recognized by both Ukraine and Russia.”
Italy is chairing this year's G7 summit , and G7 leaders are holding talks from June 13 to 15 at the Borgo Inazia resort in the Puglia region of southern Italy.
Switzerland is holding a conference on Ukraine on June 15 and 16 , in the Bürgenstock resort, near the city of Lucerne, and 80 countries have confirmed their participation.
US President Joe Biden, Chinese President Xi Jinping, and Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva will not attend the conference.
The Russian side confirms that the idea of the peace conference, which was vigorously promoted by the organizers, is unacceptable to Moscow, because the talk is about advancing a “peace formula” that is not applicable and does not take into account Russian interests.
Commenting on the conference in Switzerland, Russian President Vladimir Putin said in mid-May during a press conference in China: “They did not invite us, and what is worse is that they say they do not see a place for us there... So as long as they ignore us, there is no need for us to attend... This is first, and second, This is the most important thing... We are not willing to discuss things we do not know from the midpoint.
The Kremlin stressed that searching for ways to achieve a settlement of the Ukrainian conflict without Russia's participation is completely illogical and useless.
Today, Friday, during his meeting with the leadership of the Russian Foreign Ministry , Russian President Vladimir Putin proposed an initiative for a peaceful settlement in Ukraine .
The initiative stipulates that Russia will announce an immediate ceasefire, and its readiness to negotiate, as soon as Ukrainian forces withdraw from the territory of Russia's new regions.
In his initiative, Putin called on Kiev to announce its abandonment of its ambition to join NATO, implement a voluntary disarmament process, dismantle the organizational structures of Nazism in Ukraine, accept a position of neutrality and non-alignment with any political-military bloc, and be free of nuclear weapons. He also called on Western countries to lift Sanctions imposed on Russia.
