Strange signs on your tongue warn you not to drink coffee

A morning cup of coffee is essential for many, but one doctor warned that sudden symptoms in the tongue may indicate the need to stop drinking coffee completely.

Dr. Anis Khalaf explained to his 457,000 followers on TikTok: “You can go to the mirror and do a small test. If there are a lot of cracks in the tongue as well as a thick yellow layer, maybe you should not drink coffee.”

Khalaf claims that this is often due to a “potential imbalance in the body,” which caffeine intake may exacerbate.

Although he did not provide many details about the cause, he did point to something known as “yin deficiency” in Chinese medicine, i.e. a lack of fluids or cold with heat predominant.

Dr. Lawrence Cunningham, a general practitioner in the UK Care Guide, explained that a “yin deficiency” indicates a physical imbalance, where “nourishing aspects” are depleted, leading to insomnia, heart disturbance and other uncomfortable symptoms.

As for the thick yellow layer, Cunningham said: “In my experience, a thick yellow layer on the tongue generally indicates a malfunction in the body’s digestive system, and not a specific aversion to coffee. It can be attributed to a range of factors, such as poor oral hygiene or "Dehydration or the presence of bacteria and yeast, while coffee itself is not usually the direct cause, can exacerbate the conditions that lead to this layer."

He added: "Coffee is acidic and can change the hydrogen balance inside the mouth, which may contribute to the proliferation of bacteria and yeast, and lead to the formation of a yellow layer."

Aside from tongue symptoms, there are many other signs that drinking coffee is negatively affecting your body.

Stomach pain and acid reflux are among the most common symptoms, as coffee is known to increase stomach acid production.

Cunningham continued: “Also, frequent headaches or migraines can sometimes be linked to excessive coffee consumption, especially if the person consumes large amounts throughout the day.”

It is always recommended to visit a general practitioner to obtain accurate health advice.
