US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken made the statement today, Wednesday, during a press conference with Qatari Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Mohammed Abdul Rahman Al Thani in Doha. That the Hamas movement "proposed amendments" to President Biden's proposal regarding reaching a ceasefire agreement in Gaza.
The American minister, who arrived in Qatar from Jordan, on his last stop on a tour of the Middle East that also included Egypt and Israel, said that “some of the amendments proposed by Hamas are applicable,” adding that his country “will continue to work with mediators to fill the gaps” in order to reach an agreement between the two countries. Hamas and Israel, to achieve a complete ceasefire in Gaza.
For his part, Al Thani said during the conference that Qatar “is counting on the American role and all partners to pressure the parties to stop the war in Gaza,” adding, “We discussed with Blinken the response of Hamas and the factions to Washington’s proposal (presented by Biden at the end of last May) and we are committed to bringing the two countries closer together.” "The parties to reach an end to the war on Gaza."
He explained that Qatar is "committed" with its partners to "breaking the gap and trying to resolve differences as the best way to end the war," stressing that the countries of the region are "open to a peace plan based on the Arab initiative that leads to a two-state solution."
Blinken's tour in the Middle East coincided with the adoption by the UN Security Council, on Monday evening, of an American draft resolution calling on Israel and Hamas to fully implement the ceasefire proposal in the Gaza Strip and exchange of prisoners with Israel, which President Biden revealed at the end of last May.
The proposal includes 3 stages of a ceasefire, and ultimately stipulates a permanent cessation of hostilities and the release of Israeli detainees in Gaza in exchange for Palestinian prisoners.
In this context, Blinken said that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu assured him, during their meeting on Tuesday, of his proposed commitment announced by Biden.
While the delegation of Hamas and Islamic Jihad expressed “its readiness to deal positively to reach an agreement that ends this war against our people, based on a sense of national responsibility,” according to the statement.
While Israel insists on a temporary cessation of fighting, the factions insist on ending the war, the withdrawal of the Israeli occupation army, the freedom for the displaced to return to their areas, the introduction of sufficient humanitarian aid, and the reconstruction of Gaza, within any prisoner exchange agreement.
The Palestinian factions accuse Israel and its ally, the United States, of not wanting to end the war, and of seeking through negotiations to buy time, hoping that Tel Aviv will achieve gains.
It is aiming to reconcile differences and achieve lasting peace based on the two-state solution.
