"Rainbow" diet protects against cancer and heart disease

Dr. Anna Khakimova, a specialist in internal medicine and rheumatology, indicates that you should eat fruits of all colors of the rainbow every week, from red to purple.

The doctor told Gazeta news that this diet is called the “rainbow” diet.

“The essence of this diet is that products of different colors have different beneficial properties. The more diverse the diet, the more different useful and necessary substances are useful for the body. At least one fresh fruit or vegetable (150-200 grams) should be eaten with each meal. That is, the diet can be replenished by adding two or three types of plant foods to it,” she says.

According to her, red and pink fruits and vegetables contain the antioxidant lycopene, which protects the body from the sun's rays, improves heart health and reduces the risk of some types of cancer.

Orange and yellow ones are rich in beta-carotene, which improves the health of the eyes, skin, mucous membranes, and immune system.

Dark leafy vegetables and cabbage contain lutein and zeaxanthin. These substances fight infections and protect the body from liver, skin, stomach and colon cancer.

Blue and purple ones are rich in phenols, which reduce the risk of diabetes, cancer, inflammation and heart disease.
