Harvard School of Public Health scientists have discovered that tea, coffee, dairy products, and cereals reduce the risk of gout, while fruit juices and other products increase the risk.

The Journal of American Medical Association indicates that about 123,000 people participated in this study, including women with an average age of 50.9 and men with an average age of 54 years. The first phase of the study included collecting information about the health status of each participant. The researchers also asked them to reveal details of their diet, and after that, the phase of monitoring the development of their condition began.

During the follow-up phase, researchers discovered that 2,700 of them had gout (gouty arthritis). According to their calculations, each additional serving of whole grains reduces the risk of developing this disease by 7 percent, tea and coffee by 5 percent, and dairy products by 15 percent. As for fruit juices and sweetened drinks, they increase the risk of developing the disease by 6 percent, and vegetable oils by 16 percent. Animal fats and fish also greatly increase the risk of developing the disease.

It became clear to the researchers that adding dairy products to the diet reduces the level of uric acid in blood serum.

It is reported that the cause of pain and gouty arthritis is that uric acid crystals form deposits around the joints and in their structure.
