Oncologist: Having children reduces the risk of breast cancer

Dr. Alexander Petrovsky, Head of the Department of Oncology and Breast Cancer at the Blokhin Center, confirms that the risk of breast cancer among women who have given birth is 30 percent lower than among women who have not given birth.

He says: “The risk of breast cancer during a woman’s lifetime reaches 15 percent, and it decreases among post-menopausal women who have one child, by 13 percent compared to women who do not have children. As for women who have given birth to 2 and 3 children, this risk decreases by 19 and 29 percent.” respectively".

To reduce the risk of breast cancer, the specialist recommends that women have their first child before reaching the age of 25 and not abstain from breastfeeding.

According to him, each birth reduces the risk of breast cancer by 7 percent and breastfeeding for 12 months by 4.5 percent. This positive effect is linked to changes in hormone levels.

He points out that a woman who has given birth to one child at the age of 30-34 years is exposed to the same risks as a woman who has not given birth.

He says: “Women who gave birth before they reached the age of 25 years have a 35 percent lower risk of developing breast cancer after menopause than women who did not give birth. If they give birth to their first child between the ages of 25 and 29 years, their risk of breast cancer increases by 11 percent compared to women who did not have children. “Have children before the age of 20, and if the first birth occurs after the age of 30, the risk of breast cancer increases by 24 percent, which is alarming.”
