Myanmar remains in the 3rd worst place for human trafficking

According to the 2024 Annual Report on Human Trafficking released by the US State Department on June 24th, Myanmar continues to rank 3rd as the worst country for lack of cooperation in the fight against human trafficking.

Myanmar does not meet the standards of action to eliminate human trafficking and has not made any significant efforts, he said.

In addition, Myanmar was included in the list of 13 countries where the government itself is involved in human trafficking and forced labor.

The Myanmar military continues to recruit child soldiers and continues to force children and adults into forced labor.

Although there has been no significant effort to eradicate human trafficking, the military council has reported that it is investigating and taking action against those suspected of human trafficking and raising awareness.

After the military coup in 2021, more than three million people fled their homes due to conflicts across the country, and these people are at risk of being trafficked, he said.

Anti-trafficking efforts have also steadily declined since the coup, with the military council focusing on cracking down on pro-democracy opposition forces rather than prioritizing the judiciary, the report said.

In 2023, Myanmar was listed as the 3rd worst country for non-cooperation in combating human trafficking.

The Annual Report on Human Trafficking is published annually by the US Department of State, analyzing the situation of human trafficking in 188 countries around the world.
