A gunman opened fire on the US Embassy building in Beirut on Wednesday morning, while the Lebanese army announced that the gunman returned fire and wounded him before transporting him to the hospital to receive treatment.

The army reported, in a statement, that “the American embassy in Lebanon in the Awkar area (north of Beirut) was exposed to gunfire from a person of Syrian nationality.”

He added that his members deployed in the area "responded to the sources of fire, which resulted in the shooter being injured, arrested and transferred to a hospital for treatment, and follow-up is being conducted to determine the circumstances of the incident."

He pointed out that the army units deployed in the vicinity of the embassy are conducting an inspection of the surrounding area, “and are working to implement the necessary security measures to maintain the security of the area,” according to the army statement.

The official Lebanese News Agency reported that the Lebanese army closed the road leading to the embassy after the accident.

For its part, the Washington Embassy in Beirut said, on the “X” platform, that “at 8:34 a.m. local time, small arms fire was reported near the entrance to the embassy.”

She added: "Thanks to the quick reaction of the Lebanese Army, the Internal Security Forces, and our security team, our facilities (the embassy) and our team are safe."

The embassy concluded by saying: “Investigations are ongoing, and we are in close contact with the law enforcement authorities in the host country (Lebanon).”
