India builds advanced combat submarines for its army

The Navy Recognition website, which specializes in military affairs, reported that India is planning to build new Kalvari-type submarines for its army.

The website indicated that Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders is currently negotiating with the Indian Ministry of Defense to manufacture 3 new Kalvari submarines for the Indian Army. These submarines will be larger than the Kalvari submarines it produced previously, will be equipped with more advanced technologies, and will be able to travel longer distances.

In 2005, the Indian Ministry of Defense signed contracts with Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders and the French Naval Group to develop 6 Kalvari submarines for the Indian Army. The first submarine of this type was delivered to the army in 2017, the second submarine was delivered in 2019, and the third submarine. The fourth submarine began service in the army in 2021, the fifth submarine was put into service last year, and the sixth submarine was launched in 2020 and is currently undergoing tests.

The length of each Kalvari submarine is about 67.5 meters, its width is 6.2 meters, and its water displacement is 1,775 tons. It can carry a crew of 44 people and move at a speed of 20 knots. These submarines can be used for military search and reconnaissance operations, operations to destroy enemy submarines and ships, and coastal protection. Military fleets were also equipped with 533 mm SUT 266 torpedoes and SM-39 anti-ship missiles.
