It was reported that vaping caused a young Indonesian girl (age 22) to develop bloody ulcers in her mouth, which made eating and drinking extremely painful.
Doctors thought she had herpes, but her results were negative.
After asking her about lifestyle changes, it was discovered that she had started using e-cigarettes about a year before symptoms appeared.
Doctors were able to diagnose her with oral erythema multiforme, a type of skin disease similar to an allergic reaction, which rarely appears in and around the mouth. She was given steroid mouthwash, as well as a solution to moisten gauze and apply it to her lips 3 times a day.
They stressed the need to stop electronic smoking.
The academics, who revealed the medical condition in an American medical journal, said the condition was "most likely linked to vaping."
They noted that erythema multiforme could be triggered by certain substances found in e-cigarettes, such as propylene glycol, glycerin, nicotine, flavorings, or other toxins.
Erythema multiforme is usually caused by infections such as herpes, bacterial or fungal infections. Symptoms include: pink and red lesions on the skin and mouth that can be itchy or sometimes painful, in addition to joint pain, fever, and itching.
Minor cases can heal on their own, while more severe cases may need treatment with steroids, allergy medications, antiseptics, or antivirals depending on the root cause.
In extreme cases, hospitalization may be needed if the patient is unable to eat, is in severe pain or is severely dehydrated.
It is noteworthy that vaping has been associated with a number of health side effects, including mouth and throat irritation, eye irritation, shortness of breath, fatigue, and lung cancer.
