The All-Russian Research Institute of Geology and Mineral Resources of the World Ocean announced that its experts were able to extract soil from Antarctica, about a billion years old.
Regarding the topic, the Deputy Director General of the Institute, Herman Lychenkov, said: “For the first time in history, Russian scientists were able to extract soil from Antarctica that is about a billion years old.”
He added: "Researchers from Petersburg and a laboratory affiliated with a Chinese university participated in the research project during which we extracted the aforementioned samples."
Lichenkov pointed out that “the site chosen for drilling is located in the center of the Earth’s magnetic anomaly, as the causes of this anomaly are still unknown until now,” and noted that “the anomaly may be linked to one of the coalescence sites of tectonic plates, which is considered the limit of the merger of Antarctica and India before "About a billion years."
It should be noted that the All-Russian Research Institute of Geology and Mineral Resources in the World Ocean is considered one of the most important scientific institutions concerned with conducting geological and scientific studies, and has contributed to hundreds of research related to this field.
