"Dream Team" the best squad for the European Championship according to ChatGPT

The artificial intelligence tool, ChatGPT, has named the best final squad for the European Championship, after a special request from the Daily Mail website.

OpenAI's free ChatGPT tool is trained on a large data set to interact with users through conversation.

With the start of the European Nations Championship 2024 (Euro) in Germany, ChatGPT responded to the request to determine the best final lineup for the tournament, and listed it as follows:

Goalkeeper: Iker Casillas (Spain)

Iker Casillas is considered one of football's greatest goalkeepers, having won two Euro titles with Spain in 2008 and 2012.

In 2008, Casillas kept clean sheets in the quarter-finals, semi-finals and final, when Spain beat Germany 1-0.

He kept a clean sheet in 5 matches during the 2012 European Championship, including the final, with a stunning victory over Italy: 4-0.

ChatGPT explained that Casillas is “known for his calm demeanor and tactical acumen, leading Spain through its golden era,” as well as his “incredible reflexes, leadership and decisive saves.”

Right-back: Philipp Lahm (Germany)

Germany's Philipp Lahm has never won a European Championship title, although he did pick up a runners-up medal in 2008, when Spain won the title.

But ChatGPT described him as a "fantastic, consistent performer" and "widely regarded as one of the best full-backs in the history of football".

Centre-back: Franco Baresi (Italy)

Baresi played with the Italian national team in the 1980 and 1988 European Championships.

ChatGPT described him as "an integral part of the Italian defence, renowned for his tactical intelligence and leadership."

Center back: Franz Beckenbauer (Germany)

He is also considered one of football's all-time greats - the only defender in football history to win the prestigious Ballon d'Or twice.

ChatGPT said he is known for his control and defensive prowess at the heart of defence, as well as his pioneering position where the defender plays slightly back "to control the ball in case the striker overtakes other defenders."

Left-back: Paolo Maldini (Italy)

Left-back Paolo Maldini has never won a European Championship title, but ChatGPT praised his "consistent performances".

At the age of 19, Maldini was part of Italy's squad at Euro 1988 in West Germany, but 12 years later, he captained his country at Euro 2000.

Italy reached the final that year, but lost to France, which scored the “golden goal” in the 103rd minute to win 2-1.

Midfield: Xavi Hernandez (Spain)

ChatGPT said he "coordinated" Spain's midfield during their victories at Euro 2008 and 2012, and was "famous for the accuracy of his passes."

The chatbot added: “Xavi was pivotal in Spain’s midfield, playing a decisive role in the team’s possession-based style.”

In the 2008 European Championship, he scored the opening goal of the semi-final match against Russia, and was named the best player of the tournament.

Midfield: Michel Platini (France)

ChatGPT named Michel Platini the star of Euro 1984, as he scored an amazing 9 goals to lead France to victory.

No other player has scored this number of goals in a single Euro tournament.

The gadget described Platini as "one of the most iconic figures in football", known for his "creative playmaking and ability to score goals from midfield".

Platini won the Ballon d'Or three times in a row, and after his retirement, he assumed the presidency of UEFA between 2007 and 2015.

Midfield: Zinedine Zidane (France)

If there was any player who best represented France's glory days at the turn of the millennium, it was the legend Zinedine Zidane.

Two years after winning the World Cup on home soil in 1998, France won all but one of its matches at Euro 2000 to secure glory.

Zidane was chosen as the best player in the tournament, after scoring two goals, including the golden goal from a penalty kick in the semi-final against Portugal.

But the Frenchman's international reputation declined terribly in 2006, when he headbutted two Italian players in the World Cup final (his last match ever).

However, the chatbot said he was still celebrated as a player for his "skill, balance and ability to control matches".

Right wing: Cristiano Ronaldo (Portugal)

Considered the greatest footballer alive today (alongside Lionel Messi), ChatGPT said Ronaldo is "known for his goal-scoring prowess and physical attributes" and is "a consistent presence in multiple leagues".

Ronaldo led Portugal to glory in the 2016 European Championship, scoring 5 goals, including a goal against Wales in an unforgettable semi-final.

Striker: Marco van Basten (Netherlands)

Striker Marco van Basten played a major role in winning the only cup for the Netherlands, in the 1988 European Championship.

He scored 5 goals in that tournament, including a hat-trick against England in a group stage match at the expense of Peter Shilton.

ChatGPT said Van Basten was known for his “technical skill” and is still considered “one of the greatest strikers in the history of football.”

Van Basten played his last match in 1993 at the age of 28, due to an ankle injury that forced him to announce his retirement two years later.

Left wing: Thierry Henry (France)

Thierry Henry is "famous for his speed, skill and goal-scoring ability," ChatGPT said.

The Frenchman scored three goals at Euro 2000, including a stunning goal against Denmark in the group stage.

He was selected in the "Team of the Tournament" by UEFA, along with 6 other French players, including Zidane, Fabien Barthez and Patrick Vieira.

ChatGPT said: “Henry was a great goalscorer, known for his accuracy and calmness in front of goal. His football achievements left an indelible mark on the world of sports, and he continues to make an impact as an analyst and coach.”

Coach: Vicente del Bosque (Spain)

No final squad is complete without a coach, and ChatGPT selected Spanish coach Vicente del Bosque, who led his country to victory at Euro 2012.

“Del Bosque was praised for maintaining team harmony and effectively integrating new players into an already successful squad,” ChatGPT said.

Along with Helmut Schön of Germany, Del Bosque is the only coach to have won both a European Championship and a World Cup.

ChatGPT claims that this virtual dream team includes a "mix of players from different eras", each of whom is making "significant contributions" to the European Championship.
