Russian doctor Ekaterina Baranova stated that the celery plant, despite its many benefits, may cause skin problems in some people.
During a medical program on the Rossiya TV channel, the doctor said: “Many people know that giant hogweed can cause skin burns because it contains coumarin, but few know that the celery plant also contains this substance, which can accumulate in the skin and cause a reaction.” An allergic reaction called phytophotodermatitis, where coumarin activates when exposed to sunlight, damages skin cells, and causes skin burns.
The doctor pointed out that the risk of burns from substances found in celery is higher in people with sensitive skin, especially in people who are rarely exposed to sunlight.
Celery is considered one of the most popular plant foods for people who follow low-calorie diets, and many studies indicate that it contains antioxidants that are beneficial to the heart and blood vessels and compounds that are beneficial to health in general.
