Cuba decides to join South Africa's lawsuit against Israel in the International Court of Justice

Cuba decided to join the lawsuit filed by South Africa against Israel in the International Court of Justice, on charges of committing genocide in Gaza. She stressed that this initiative comes in line with her commitment to support international efforts seeking to put an end to the genocide against the Palestinians.

Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodriguez said on Friday, “Cuba has decided to participate, as a third country, in South Africa’s complaint against Israel before the International Court of Justice.”

The Cuban Foreign Ministry indicated in a statement that “Cuba will use its right to present, as a third country, its interpretation of the rules of the agreement, which Israel has blatantly violated through its actions in the illegally occupied Palestinian territories in the Gaza Strip.”

She added that this initiative comes in line with Cuba's "firm and sustainable commitment to support and contribute as much as possible to the legitimate international efforts aimed at putting an end to the genocide against the Palestinian people."

At the end of December 2023, South Africa filed a lawsuit against Israel before the International Court of Justice on the grounds that it had violated the 1948 United Nations Convention on the Prevention of Genocide.

Later, several countries submitted requests to join the case, including Türkiye, Libya, Nicaragua, Colombia, Mexico, Ireland, Chile, and Spain.

Since October 7, Israel has been waging a devastating war on Gaza with absolute American support, leaving more than 123,000 Palestinians martyred and wounded, most of them children and women, and about 10,000 missing amid massive destruction and famine that claimed the lives of children and the elderly.
