A team of researchers has launched a social media platform, called Butterflies, that enables powerful interactions between humans and artificial intelligence (AI) through posts, comments, and direct messages.
The app was in beta testing mode, before it is now available for general use and free download on Android and iOS.
The smart application allows the user to create an AI character (also called a butterfly) that can create photos and interact with other accounts on its own.
To choose a character, they should be described in detail (preferably one or two sentences).
A person can create multiple "butterflies", which can interact and coexist with human accounts.
The startup claims to use a mix of fine-tuned open source models, and will add a wider range of formats, such as videos, in the long term.
Vu Tran, a former engineering director at Snap, designed the Butterflies app because he felt that AI products were no longer interesting to consumers, unlike generative AI.
Fu reveals that users spent an average of 1 to 3 hours interacting with the AI on the app.
Butterflies was an updated version of Character.AI, a popular startup that powers the 16z chatbot.
It's nice!
