Egyptian MP Hisham Hussein, through a briefing, called for setting controls on the content of the “X” platform in Egypt, after the platform announced that it officially allowed the publication of pornographic materials.

Hussein said in his request, addressed to both the Prime Minister and the Minister of Communications and Information Technology, that the “X” platform announced a few days ago in an official statement that it allows publishing pornographic materials through the platform according to conditions related to the age group of users and their interests.

He added that it is known that the “X” platform is a social media platform used by millions of Egyptians of all age groups on a daily basis, which makes them vulnerable to viewing these materials on a platform dedicated to social media, which entails moral and psychological risks that may affect entire generations.

The Egyptian representative continued: “It is also known that pursuing and blocking pornographic websites at the national level is a major challenge for several technical and technological reasons, including that they use advanced techniques to hide and circumvent blocking and filtering systems.”

He added, "But we are now facing a world-famous social media platform that allows the dissemination of pornographic content, which makes confronting this danger not impossible," calling for imposing electronic censorship on the content published on the platform that is displayed in Egypt.

Hussein called on the state to launch public awareness campaigns through various media to highlight the harms of pornographic content, especially on children and youth, and to develop educational programs in schools to educate students about the dangers and negative effects of pornographic materials.

He also stressed the need to "modernize and strengthen the legal framework by enacting strict laws that criminalize the production and dissemination of pornographic materials, and developing legal mechanisms to immediately remove pornographic content from the Internet, while imposing deterrent penalties on violators, including operators of pornographic sites."
