Amid allegations about mouthwash being linked to cancer finding a safe alternative for oral health

Leafy greens, such as lettuce, contain a lot of nitrates that can reduce bacteria and acidity in the mouth “causing gum disease and tooth decay,” according to experts.

Therefore, health experts advise drinking lettuce juice, claiming that it may be better for oral health than regular commercial mouthwash, especially after the spread of a Belgian study this week, linking mouthwash that contains alcohol (such as Listerine Cool Mint) to cancer, as researchers claimed that it raises blood levels. Two types of bacteria in the mouth may cause tumors of the esophagus, colon, and rectum.

In a statement, Kenvue, which owns the Listerine brand, rejected the study and insisted its products were safe.

In search of alternatives, Mia Burley and Siobhan Moran, from the University of the West of Scotland, studied the effect of nitrates on the oral health of athletes.

Drinking lettuce or leafy green vegetable juice, which contain high levels of nitrates, has been shown to protect teeth from acidic sports drinks and carbohydrate gels during exercise, while increasing levels of healthy bacteria and reducing acidity.

For example, drinking lettuce juice for two weeks reduces gingivitis and increases levels of healthy bacteria in patients with gum disease.

It is noteworthy that not brushing and flossing the teeth adequately leads to the accumulation of plaque, a sticky layer of bacteria, on the teeth and gums, which causes tooth decay and gum disease.

Leafy vegetables, such as spinach and lettuce, are rich in vitamins, minerals, antioxidants and nitrates.
