Turkish hair transplant surgeon, Abdul Aziz Baloy, revealed that energy drinks that contain high levels of caffeine, sugar and additives may cause baldness.
Baloy, from Elether in Istanbul, said: “Although energy drinks may be good when consumed in moderation, excessive consumption may directly cause a greater risk of hair loss or affect overall health. Excessive consumption of energy drinks is a predisposing factor for toxicity in some people.” Elements, such as caffeine and selenium.
While moderate levels of caffeine can promote hair growth, Dr. Baloy said consuming too much of it can lead to increased stress and hormonal imbalance that can damage hair follicles.
He added that energy drinks can directly contribute to hair loss, as well as exacerbate other health problems that cause baldness in men, including obesity and diabetes.
Baloy also cited a Chinese study of more than 1,000 young adults, published in January last year, which indicated that men who consume sugary drinks, including energy drinks, are 42% more likely to lose their hair.
More studies are needed to uncover this relationship.
Excessive consumption of energy drinks may be an indicator of unhealthy lifestyles and poor diet, which can contribute to general hair loss rather than directly stimulating it.
Baloy said men should try to limit energy drinks to reduce the risk of baldness.
Meanwhile, British hair transplant surgeons said any supposed link between energy drinks and hair loss is weak at best.
