An expert has revealed that a certain fruit, found in every supermarket, can provide a whole host of amazing health benefits.

Nutritionist Alex Rawani said that red grapes can help reduce cholesterol and inflammation, and boost immunity.

Speaking to The Times, Rawani, a researcher in nutritional sciences at University College London, explained that red grapes are rich in polyphenols (antioxidant plant compounds).

Red grapes contain a type called anthocyanin, a blue pigment that benefits brain health, and resveratrol, which has been shown to have anti-inflammatory and anti-aging effects.

The skin and seeds of red grapes are also rich in other antioxidants, including catechins and epicatechin, which reduce oxidative stress in the body.

Rawani said: “A detailed study found that eating three daily servings of 80 grams of grapes for two weeks increases levels of beneficial bacteria such as Streptococcus thermophilus and enhances the health of the intestinal microbiome. These changes are often associated with improved digestion, immune support, and reduced inflammation.”

The same study also showed a significant increase in molecules associated with DNA repair, suggesting that bioactive compounds in grapes may enhance mechanisms associated with a longer, healthier life.

Grapes reduce low-density lipoprotein because of the amount of fiber they contain, Gloucestershire Live reports. This is because soluble fiber can delay or even reduce the absorption of some nutrients into the blood, such as cholesterol.

Another study revealed the benefits of red grapes specifically, and found that people with high cholesterol who ate red grapes daily for 8 weeks had lower total cholesterol as well as low-density lipoprotein.
