Spanish Defense Minister Margarita Robles on Saturday described the Israeli war on the Gaza Strip as a "true genocide."
“We cannot ignore what is happening in Gaza, which is a real genocide,” Robles said during a televised interview.
She stressed that Madrid's recognition of a Palestinian state is not a move against Israel, but rather a practical step to contribute to "ending the violence in Gaza."
She added: "This is not against anyone. This is not against the State of Israel. This is not against the Israelis whom we respect."
Robles' statements came during an interview with the official TVE television, and this comment echoes what was said by Spanish Deputy Prime Minister Yolanda Diaz, who a few days ago described the war in Gaza as genocide.
In turn, Spanish Foreign Affairs Minister Jose Manuel Albarez said on Saturday that "the precautionary measures taken by the International Court of Justice, which included the decision to stop the Israeli attack in Rafah, are mandatory and we demand their implementation."
On Friday, judges of the International Court of Justice, the highest court of the United Nations, ordered Israel to stop its military attack on Rafah “immediately,” in an emergency ruling in the case brought by South Africa, in which Israel is accused of committing genocide.
Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez had previously announced to Spanish representatives that Spain would recognize the Palestinian state “on May 28th.”
