Southampton wins the "most expensive match in the world"
-
Southampton returned to the English Premier League for next season after yesterday's victory over Leeds United 1-0 in a match dubbed "the most valuable individual match in world football."

Adam Armstrong scored the only goal of the match in the 24th minute, at Wembley Stadium, in the playoff match for promotion to the top flight.

According to Deloitte's Sports Business Group, Southampton will earn at least £140 million ($177 million) over the next three seasons through "expected increases in matchday, television and commercial revenues."

That would rise to more than £305 million ($386 million) if the club avoids relegation in its first season.

Southampton, which won the FA Cup in 1976, fell after 11 years spent among the elite clubs.

The club hopes that this return, which was celebrated in the presence of about 35,000 fans at the famous Wembley Stadium, will be a prelude to a new long stay in the Premier League.

Southampton is the third club to secure promotion to the Premier League, after Leicester City and Ipswich Town.

It is noteworthy that Luton Town, Burnley and Sheffield clubs were relegated to the first division "Championship".
