Israeli media announced the discovery of a new type of dragonfly in Israel, coming from the Sinai Peninsula in Egypt.
Israeli media said, “The newly discovered dragonfly, which was called the Sinai Dragonfly, was discovered in the southern Arava region in the Negev Desert.”
The Israeli Walla news website said, “A dragonfly that we had not seen before was discovered in Israel, and it may be more abundant in Oman, the Emirates, Egypt, Sudan, and even Niger.”
The new dragonfly was given the scientific name “Paragomphus sinaiticus” after it was discovered as a result of a survey of the area to document the presence of a variety of organisms living in the Negev.
The website explained, "The new discovery is the result of cooperation between the joint Teva-Biz project, the Nature Conservation Society, the Ministry of Environmental Protection, the Ornithology Center of the Israeli Nature Conservation Society, the Ornithology Center in Eilat, and Kibbutz Not." Smadar.”
The best biodiversity researchers from the Arava, the Negev and the rest of Israel, ecologists from the Nature and Parks Authority, together with students from the Arava Institute and students from schools in Naot Smadar and South Arava were selected to explore every corner of the kibbutz and its surroundings, discovering what could disturb the biodiversity. The website noted, “67 species of dragonflies and dragonflies have been recorded so far in Israel, some of which appear to have become extinct due to the drying up of Lake Hula, and some of which are very rare and threatened with extinction.”
