Massive floods on Friday evening swept several areas in southwestern Germany, prompting the authorities to evacuate hundreds of residents and raise the level of precaution.

The Civil Defense Office called on residents of the Saarland state bordering France, which witnessed a record rise in water levels, to exercise the highest levels of caution.

The local authorities' warning to residents came after the collapse of part of a water barrier in the town of Kafr Sheid, which led to the cessation of work at the electrical power production station in this area, according to the German newspaper Bild.

The newspaper said that these floods "have not been witnessed in a century."

In turn, the Meteorological Authority warned of “massive” floods in the southwestern regions of the country.

In the neighboring state of Rhineland-Palatinate, the authorities called on about 200 residents of the town of Schöden to leave their homes in light of the continuing rise in water levels.

In France, the authorities warned of the danger of rain and floods in Moselle.

Interior Minister Gerald Darmanin, via the X platform, called on residents to take “the utmost caution and respect the instructions of the authorities.”

According to a statement by the Fire and Ambulance Department, floods and heavy rains affected approximately 117 municipalities in the region.
