“I am proud of you.” Sanders expresses his support for the protests at American universities

US Senator Bernie Sanders

US Senator Bernie Sanders expressed his support for student protests at American universities in solidarity with Palestine. Sanders wrote on the X platform, today, Saturday: “In 1962, we organized sit-ins to end racist policies at the University of Chicago, and I was arrested in 1963, but we were right.”

He added: "I am proud to see students protesting the war in Gaza. Stay peaceful and determined. You are on the right side of history."

In a press statement on Wednesday, Sanders criticized the suppression of protests on American universities, calling on journalists to focus on the ongoing attacks of the Israeli occupation on Gaza instead of paying attention to the protests in support of Palestine on universities.

Sanders is considered one of the most vocal Jewish senators in the US Senate, criticizing Netanyahu's extremist government.

The US Senator pointed out that holding Netanyahu and his government responsible for the violence does not constitute hostility to Judaism. Netanyahu was accused of practicing ethnic cleansing in the besieged Palestinian Strip.

The student movement in support of the Gaza Strip has expanded to several countries around the world since its launch at Columbia University on April 18, and it faced a severe security crackdown, which resulted in the arrest of dozens of students and the expulsion of many of them from universities.

The Gaza Strip has been exposed to a devastating Israeli war with American support since last October 7, which has left about 112,000 dead and wounded, most of them children and women, which necessitated Tel Aviv’s trial before the International Court of Justice on charges of carrying out “genocide.”
