Dr. Ekaterina Buzinova, endocrinologist and nutrition expert, points out that vitamin D is an important nutrient for the human reproductive system, so its deficiency in the body negatively affects reproduction.
The specialist says: “Vitamin D receptors are found in all organs of women and men alike, and its deficiency is more common in couples who plan to become pregnant for a long period or who suffer from infertility. Its low level affects the occurrence of pregnancy in ovulation stimulation cycles and assisted reproductive technology programs.”
According to her, studies conducted on animals suffering from a severe vitamin D deficiency showed that their reproductive function decreased by 75 percent, but they restored it after raising its level.
She says: “Vitamin D, according to the study, participates in the processes of hormone synthesis and the sensitivity of tissue receptors to their action, so its deficiency can affect all stages of pregnancy: from the quality of the woman’s eggs to the implantation of a fertilized embryo in the uterus.”
Its effect in restoring reproductive function has been observed during the treatment of polycystic ovary syndrome and nutritional deficiencies.
The specialist points out that in the case of vitamin D deficiency, calcium metabolism and the activity of the immune system are disturbed, which leads to a decrease in the body’s vitality and an increased risk of disease during pregnancy.
She says: “When studying the effect of vitamin D levels on sperm quality in men, it became clear that its deficiency in the blood has a negative impact, so its deficiency must be compensated for by taking sufficient doses of it.”
In addition according to her, unfortunately foods containing a high percentage of vitamin D are unable to compensate for its deficiency, as active sun. Therefore, if the test results show a decrease in its level to less than 30 ng/ml when planning pregnancy, you should consult a doctor.
