A new study has revealed a promising way to make the body use ready-made and quick-prepared meals as a source of energy instead of storing them in the form of fat.
Researchers at the University of Aberdeen, Scotland, discovered that exercising regularly, for just 5 hours a week, changes how the body burns saturated fats and encourages it to use them for energy.
The team studied how the body uses different types of fat, depending on an individual's fitness level, and recruited "very healthy" male athletes and type 2 diabetics who did little or no exercise.
The athletes underwent instructions known as “habit change,” where they went from exercising vigorously for at least 9 and a half hours a week, to not exercising at all.
Meanwhile, people with type 2 diabetes underwent endurance training, exercising for 5 hours per week.
Participants received small amounts of different fats via injection, before and after the lifestyle change, and had MRI scans to see how the fats changed inside their muscle cells.
The results showed that the group with type 2 diabetes lost weight, improved their insulin sensitivity, and reduced their cholesterol, triglyceride, and fasting glucose levels.
The study also found that in athletes, saturated fats are used extensively in physical activity as the "preferred source of energy."
Lead author, Dana Dawson, said: “We discovered that athletes store and use saturated fats extensively in high-performance physical activity, and, conversely, we observed their storage in people with type 2 diabetes. We also showed that endurance training in people with type 2 diabetes "With type 2 diabetes, they have increased storage and use of saturated fat in their skeletal muscle cells."
Professor Brian Williams, chief scientific officer at the British Heart Foundation, which supported the study, said: “This small study reinforces the benefits of keeping active on heart health. While the study compared two very specific groups, the results highlight that physical activity can improve how people use The body has different types of fat.
The results were published in the journal Nature Communications.
