Scientists from Spain's Rovira i Virgili University have discovered that children eating ultra-processed foods increases their risk of cardiovascular disease and diabetes.
Jama Network Open magazine indicates that, according to researchers, ultra-processed foods contain a high percentage of fat, salt, sugar and carbohydrates, which increases the risk of children aged 3 years and over developing cardiovascular disease and diabetes.
1,500 children aged 3-6 years participated in this study. The researchers asked their parents to provide them with information about the amount of ultra-processed foods their children usually eat. It is attributed to ultra-processed foods, foods produced in industrial conditions with the addition of large amounts of sugar, salt, fats, artificial colors and preservatives. These include fast food, potato chips, frozen foods, sweetened soft drinks, processed meats, cheese, cakes and biscuits.
The researchers discovered that children who eat ultra-processed foods have a higher body mass index, waist circumference and body fat level, in addition to a higher level of glucose in their blood.
It also turned out that excessive consumption of fast food, ice cream and fatty foods led to a decrease in the level of good cholesterol in their blood. As is known, good cholesterol helps protect the heart and blood vessels, and its low level increases the risk of heart disease.
Researchers point out that an additional risk factor for cardiovascular disease in children is their weight gain as a result of excessive consumption of ultra-processed foods.
