About 311 people were killed as a result of floods that swept through Baghlan province in northern Afghanistan, according to a new toll reported by the World Food Program and published by Agence France-Presse.
Sudden floods struck northern Afghanistan , killing more than 200 people in Baghlan province alone, according to a previous preliminary toll, while the authorities declared a state of emergency and sent rescue teams to treat the wounded.
Heavy rains on Friday led to the overflow of rivers and mud torrents in villages and agricultural lands in several states, the most affected were the northern areas of Baghlan.
In Baghlan Jadid province, about 1,500 homes were damaged or destroyed and "more than a hundred people died."
For its part, the Taliban government said that the floods had killed 62 people by Friday evening, warning that the toll could rise.
For its part, the Ministry of Defense ordered that emergency teams rushed to rescue the injured and trapped people.
The Ministry ordered several military sectors to "provide assistance to the victims of this accident with all available capabilities."
The Air Force said that it began evacuation operations as weather conditions improved on Saturday, noting that more than 100 injured people were transferred to the hospital, without specifying the states concerned.
