The results of this study showed that mercury pollution is widespread in marine and freshwater around the world. That is, many foods, including fish and marine mammals, often contain high concentrations of methylmercury (a highly toxic mercury compound) that exceed the level safe for human health.
It turns out that the level of mercury is higher than the permissible limit in two-thirds (67 percent) of tuna, sharks and marlin fish.
The areas most polluted with mercury that caused scientists concern were the Mediterranean Sea, the freshwater system in South America, and some regions of North America.
The team hopes that the results of their work will contribute to taking measures and measures to protect nature and human health from the effects of the toxic metal.
