The Algerian Public Prosecutor announced today, Monday, the arrest of 7 people and placing them in custody pending investigation, following the death of 5 children who drowned on a beach near the capital, while participating in a school trip last Saturday.
The Public Prosecutor’s statement said: “The Republic Prosecutor’s Office at the Hussein Dey Court ordered the opening of an in-depth and precise preliminary investigation into this incident and the circumstances and circumstances that accompanied it, especially the availability of legal and regulatory conditions related to protecting children involved in such activities and preserving their physical safety, while specifying responsibilities against anyone who is proven "His involvement in the incident."
The statement added that the preliminary results of the investigation resulted in “the arrest of 7 people who were placed under surveillance pending the completion of investigation procedures.”
The drowning of the five students on Saturday evening aroused great sympathy and shock among Algerians. President Abdelmadjid Tebboune offered his condolences to their families and sent the Minister of Solidarity to console them.
The children came from the state of Medea, located about 90 kilometers south of the capital, with 60 of their classmates on a trip to Al-Sablat Park overlooking the sea and the nearby Great Mosque of Algiers.
