The remains of an ancient aquatic lizard belonging to the ichthyosaur species were discovered in the Bolchernigovsky district, in the Russian Samara Oblast.
The Samara Archaeological Center said on its page on the Russian VKontakte (VK) social network that experts described this discovery as “unique.”
A tractor driver found these remains of the ancient lizard. The local museum was informed of this discovery, and the museum immediately sent a specialized team to the Bolchernigovsky area.
A report published by the center stated: “The remains of an ichthyosaur, an ancient aquatic lizard, were found, buried for millions of years under a thin layer of dirt.”
Researchers were able to determine the diet of the ancient lizard. The report confirmed that "fish scales and the remains of mollusk shells are preserved between the ribs in the abdominal area, and specialists will examine it soon."
