A Kazakh court issues prison sentences against members of a terrorist cell who intended to go to Syria

An Astana court sentenced eight Kazakh citizens to prison terms ranging from seven to 20 years on charges of terrorist activities.

TASS reported, based on information from the Prosecutor General's Office, that the defendants in the case intended to establish a theocratic regime (rule according to Sharia) in the country.

Investigations also revealed a link between the convicts and armed groups active in Syria. It turned out that the group members intended to head to areas of armed confrontation in Syria.

The Public Prosecutor's Office reported that the group's leader worked to provide funding for a terrorist organization fighting in Syria.

Earlier, a court in the Russian Republic of Karachay-Cherkessia issued 18-year prison sentences for three ISIS supporters who were preparing to carry out terrorist attacks in the republic using primitive explosive means.
