Experts at the World Health Organization said that sharing cups and water bottles with a sick friend may not actually transmit the common cold virus.
The new guidance, issued by a coalition of nearly 50 doctors, dispels the prevailing idea that hard surfaces and skin may be the cause of the spread of respiratory viruses such as colds and influenza.
The decision contained in a “historic report” resolved the ongoing debate in the “Covid” era about whether some viruses often spread through inhaling polluted air, or from contaminated surfaces.
Speaking to the Daily Mail website, virology experts welcomed the conclusion that surfaces are not as vital for transmitting diseases as previously thought.
“We know that washing hands and being careful not to touch surfaces and cups is going to be important for preventing gastrointestinal infections, ” said Dr. Don Milton, an expert in respiratory viruses and co-author of the new WHO guidance . “I think how important it is for respiratory viruses is perhaps... It would be much less."
WHO guidelines apply to all lung pathogens, including coronavirus, influenza and rhinovirus.
The report did not include infections other than the respiratory system, such as norovirus infections, which can be spread by germs on the hands.
Until late 2020, the World Health Organization considered only a small number of infections transmitted through the air, such as tuberculosis and measles, as well as “Covid” at first, which prompted millions of people in early 2020 to disinfect all surfaces.
