The Japanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs affirmed that Tokyo continues to strengthen strategic cooperation with NATO, with which it shares basic values and strategic interests.
“In response to the changing international security situation and to maintain and strengthen the international order based on international law, Japan will confidently strengthen strategic cooperation with NATO, with which it shares core values and strategic interests,” the ministry’s statement said.
Wechsler pointed out that in 2023 during the NATO summit in July and in the presence of Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida, an agreement on the ITPP between Japan and NATO was announced.
The ITPP aims to take cooperation between Japan and the Alliance to a new level, including four priority areas: new security challenges, traditional challenges, enhancing cooperation and promoting core values.
Within these areas, 16 specific areas of cooperation have been identified, including cybersecurity, strategic communications, science and technology.
This year, the Japanese Prime Minister is also likely to participate in the NATO summit scheduled to be held in Washington in July.
